I'm a food lover; in fact I live for food! I enjoy the whole process of planning meals, buying the ingredients and then the cooking/preparing (not that I'm very good at that part though). The trouble is I find it really hard to find produce that is local, free-range and organic. But what does that actually mean? How can I be sure that what I buy is what I'm expecting?
Let's start with the term "organic" - it's a fairly new term, that's been flying about recently but is it actually new? The answer to that is certainly not! Organic farming has been happening for generations; it's just with the introduction of chemical pesticides and fertilisers, amongst other modern farming practices (which began in the early 20th century) that the term has been used to separate this type of farming practice.

"Thought (formerly Braintree Clothing) is a contemporary sustainable clothing brand. Drawing inspiration from nature, vintage and the world around us; their collections are diverse, inspiring and unique. Having crafted thoughtfully designed clothing for over twenty years, they are now one of the UK’s leading sustainable fashion brands. Their commitment to the environment is woven into every garment and their fabrics include organic cotton, bamboo, rayon, Tencel, responsibly sourced wool and recycled polyester.
They work with some of the same factories they did when they first started and believe in growing business together. People and partners are important to them – they have a Code of Conduct and other policies that put them first. Everyone employed by Thought is treated with respect, paid a fair wage and free from any kind of discrimination – it really is a brand with a conscience." For some reason, Thought has never been a brand I've ever considered; it's always just been overlooked. I was excited to see some brilliant pieces on their website recently, so I thought now is as good a time as any to give it a try. I placed my first order online and it came the very next day, before noon - checkbox ticked for fast delivery! It arrived in paper packaging - another checkbox ticked! With an added little beauty sample, that has me intrigued as I've not had chance to try that brand yet; Nourish London. Why I started this blog...It got me thinking when my other half said that he's never known anyone as passionate about where things come from as me. I will literally spend hours researching brands, farmers, markup and everything in between.
A few colleagues had also started to ask me about the ethics of certain brands too (so I know it must be bad!). So when I had a spare few minutes sat at my desk, I decided to develop the idea of writing a blog and that evening The Ethical Edit was born! Naturally, I'm interested in all aspects of an ethical lifestyle but it has to fit in with what I need and when I need it. I'm certainly not an "eco-warrior" but I do like to know that the money I spend isn't lining a large corporation that exploits its suppliers. I want to know everyone in the chain gets paid fairly. |
